2022 is the International Year of Glass – and by a happy coincidence, the 2nd National Salon of Applied Arts and Design is also organized this year.
The first Salon, which showcased the latest achievements in contemporary Hungarian applied art and design, was held five years ago in 2017 and featured the works of 208 artists. The current Salon, the second of its kind, has expanded the number of exhibitors to more than 300. The exhibition, entitled Common Space, drew on Aristotle's Categories to invite visitors to take an in-depth walk among the objects. The exhibition offers two ways to view works from the last five years. The first leads from concrete materiality to immaterial substances, to projected ideas, while the second leads from strict functionality to the realm of autonomous art. Following them, we can move from the most ancient art of ceramics, dating back to the mysterious moment of the birth of human culture, to the communicative spaces created in virtual space. Although the individual artistic fields can be separated, their spatial relationships present a coherent process. The different territories and the two arcs of thought create exciting intersections, and at the meeting points new qualities are born, new connections are made.
As has become customary in the case of the Salons, the exhibition is a curatorial selection that offers the opportunity for a large-scale showcase of the artists of the respective disciplines in the impressive spaces of the Kunsthalle. In view of this special occasion, the Salon will place a special emphasis on glass art, both in terms of its historical aspects and characteristics, as well as in the presentation of contemporary works of art - the Bohus-Lugossy Foundation is the professional partner of the Kunsthalle in the realisation of the exhibition.
Four generations of artists are represented, from the doyens of the professions to talented young artists at the beginning of their careers. The curator appointed by the Kunsthalle, András B. Szilágyi, is supported by Eleonóra Balogh, co-curator, in connection with the "2022 International Year of Glass" programme, and Krzysztof Ducki, György Fusz, Hedvig Harmati, László Kálmán, Tamás Liszka, István Szenes and Fruzsina Tóth, as chief advisors.
